My father in law passed on January 5th of last year.

Kinja'd!!!

He left us a 68 Beetle.

Kinja'd!!!

But he left us soooo much other stuff that we just filled up the garage, burying this engine under all of his stuff.

Kinja'd!!!

On the 1 year anniversary of his death we decided to finally pay to bring the Beetle home.

Kinja'd!!!

We’ve been organizating the garage. Trying to make room. It’s been 4 hours away at my wife’s grandmother’s house. Here are some year old pics.

Kinja'd!!!

Bob (father in law) just replaced the floor pan, new shocks, treated the interior. Other than some dirt it’s a decently restored 68.

Kinja'd!!!

He had wrecked 3 vehicles from not taking his insulin. We think he was afraid to drive his beloved Beetle that he bought in highschool.

Kinja'd!!!

I can’t wait to see it in our garage.

It currently has it’s original engine in it. We don’t know much about the souped up engine in our garage. If you can tell what you’re looking at from the pics, please let me know. I’ll be in the garage for a while painting a 2002 so if you need better pictures of parts for identification let me know.

Kinja'd!!!

Thanks

Sorry for your loss.

R eally cool beetle. I’m drooling over the engine, there, besides the aftermarket “performance” heads, it’s hard to say what that work was done on the engine itself without opening it or putting it on a dyno ?

Do you have some details on the carburetor maybe ?

It’s a Weber. Other than that... I know the engine has aftermarket parts inside. He claimed that it was 50 hp over stock.

the visible dual port intakes and heads weren’t factory until 71, IIRC. T he various size of motor bore/stroke upgrades are really difficult to identify from the outside.

My wife will forever be afraid to hurt the bug. It caught on fire 3 times while Bob owned it. He restored it every time. The engine might be for sale. I'll have to ask my wife if it is or isn't... I'll get back to you if you're seriously interested.

I agree. It's gonna be really hard to identify the value without cracking it open. Bob was a crazy dude. There could be some serious shit in this thing.

The carb looks to be a Scat Weber kit, or a very close approximation. Bugpack makes a lot of performance parts, I suspect it has upgraded heads and internals.

Bugs are getting kinda scarce - really glad to see one getting back on the road.

Thanks for the info. I suspect the value to be slightly bonkers, knowing who Bob was. I'll try my damndest to get it on the road, but fear my wife will never let it leave the garage. I can't be mad either way. If she can walk down to the garage and have a moment with her father... That's kinda priceless. I'll support her either way. Even though I wanna Hoon the shit outta that Bug

Right on. We’re waiting to hear back from Bob’s friend who knows why it was taken out of the Beetle. He told us last year but we were preoccupied with the funeral. I’ll send an email when we get word back. Bob's friend smokes A Lot of weed, and might take a week or three to reply.
